Cosmetic tattooing (also called semi-permanent makeup or PMU) is the process of implanting pigment into the upper layers of the skin using a fine machine needle. Unlike regular tattoos, which go deeper, cosmetic tattooing is designed to fade gracefully over time — typically 1–3 years — giving you a natural, manageable result rather than something permanent.

Results vary by treatment and individual. As a guide: brow tattoos last 1–2 years, lip blush 1–3 years, and eyeliner tattoos 2–3+ years. Sun exposure, skin type, and skincare routine all affect longevity. A touch-up appointment at 4–8 weeks after your initial session is standard, followed by annual or biennial top-ups.

A topical numbing cream is applied before and throughout your session, which significantly reduces discomfort. Most clients describe the sensation as a mild scratching or vibrating feeling rather than pain. Lip blush and eyeliner can be a little more sensitive than brows, but the numbing cream makes a substantial difference. Sessions run 2–3 hours, with comfort checks throughout.

You must be 18 or older. Cosmetic tattooing is not suitable if you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding, have had recent facial surgery, or are undergoing active chemotherapy. It requires extra caution if you have autoimmune conditions, take isotretinoin (Roaccutane), or use prescription blood thinners — please discuss this with Kirra before booking. A consultation can help clarify your eligibility.

Most cosmetic tattooing appointments run 2–3 hours from start to finish. This includes the design consultation at the beginning (particularly important for brows, where Kirra maps and draws the shape before any pigment is placed), numbing time, the tattooing itself, and a final review at the end.

The initial peel takes 7–10 days, during which the treated area will scab and flake. The colour will look patchy and may seem to almost disappear — this is completely normal and not a sign of a failed result. The pigment settles back over weeks 2–6 as your skin heals from underneath. The full, final result is visible at around 6 weeks, which is when a touch-up is assessed.

A touch-up is booked at 4–8 weeks after your initial appointment, once the area is fully healed. This session is used to assess the pigment retention, refine any areas that healed unevenly, and deepen the colour if needed. Not everyone needs a significant touch-up — it depends on your skin type, lifestyle, and how the initial session settled.

Microblading uses a hand blade to cut hair-stroke patterns into the skin, which can heal unpredictably — especially on oily skin — and tends to blur and spread over time. Pixi uses a machine nano technique instead: ultra-fine needle strokes that sit more consistently in the skin and heal more predictably across all skin types. The result is more faithful to the natural-hair look, long-term.

In some cases, yes — but this depends entirely on the existing tattoo's colour, placement, and how it has healed. Corrective work on previous tattooing is more complex than starting fresh, and Kirra prefers to assess this in person at a consultation before committing to a booking.
